How AI Is Reshaping My Career in Data: A T-SQL Tuesday #189 Contribution

August 11, 2025

Welcome to T-SQL Tuesday #189! This month, I have the honor of hosting the blog party, and the theme is: “How is AI changing your career?” . You can read the invitation here.

As the host, I’m excited to share my own journey and reflections on how artificial intelligence is reshaping my work in the data space.

AI Tools in My Daily Workflow

I’ve been actively using a variety of AI tools to enhance database development, administration, and data analysis:

  • Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Search for conversational data exploration.
  • Azure AI Studio for building intelligent applications.
  • Vectorizing existing data and indexing it for semantic search.
  • MCP server integration with databases and AI-powered applications.
  • Large language models and Python notebooks to extract and analyze data from Azure SQL Database.

These tools have made data interaction more intuitive and opened up new possibilities for solving complex problems.

Changing the Way I Code

AI is transforming how I write and optimize code across multiple languages:

  • GitHub Copilot (Ask, Agent, Edit modes) helps with T-SQL, PowerShell, and Python.
  • SSMS Copilot streamlines query development and troubleshooting.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat enhances collaboration and documentation.

These tools are accelerating development cycles and allowing me to focus more on architecture and strategy.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

While my full-time job keeps me busy, I prioritize continuous learning:

  • I focus on what my company needs.
  • I explore new technologies during my spare time.
  • I experiment with proof-of-concepts to stay current.

AI’s Impact on My Role and Industry

I’m not concerned about AI replacing roles. Instead, I see it as a challenge and an opportunity:

  • I strive to stay relevant by adapting and learning.
  • AI tools, especially GitHub Copilot, save me time that I can use for strategic work.

Adapting to Fast-Paced Changes

My approach is simple: learn and use as much as I can.

  • I’m not afraid to dive into new technologies.
  • I talk to stakeholders to understand their problems.
  • I explore how AI can help solve those problems.

Preparing for the Future

I’m fortunate to work for an employer that values training. This allows me to:

  • Acquire new skills through hands-on experimentation.
  • Apply what I learn in real-world scenarios.
  • Stay aligned with industry trends and demands.

AI: Enhancement or Challenge?

AI is both a challenge and an enhancement:

  • It pushes me to rethink traditional approaches.
  • It empowers me to do more with less.
  • The key is to embrace change, adapt, and grow.

Final Thoughts

This is truly uncharted territory. The pace at which AI is evolving leaves many questions unanswered—not just for our industry, but for the world at large. I don’t know exactly where this journey will take us, and that uncertainty is real.

But I’m not worried about things I can’t control. Instead, I focus on what I can control: staying curious, staying relevant, and continuing to grow in my work. That mindset helps me navigate the changes with confidence and purpose.
